Colaiste na Toirbhirte students in final of Fashion Awards with a dress made from milk bottles

Coláiste na Toirbhirte Students in the Grand Final of the Junk Kouture

Junk Kouture is a national competition for second level students in Ireland and Northern Ireland which challenges teenagers to create high-end wearable fashion from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin. Junk Kouture aims to inspire and ignite passion in these teenagers while at the same time subtly educating them about the importance of recycling and reusing waste for the good of the planet. In the last three years, Junk Kouture has established itself as the premier fashion competition for teenagers throughout Ireland.

Coláiste na Toirbhirte 5th year art students, Barbara Mitrasova and Julia Sworzeniowska designed an extraordinary outfit using plastic spoons and Milk bottles.

Approximately 700+ milk bottles were used in this creation, many of which were Cloná Bottles.

In January the girls entered their creation in the Junk Kouture competition with fellow 5th year student Leona Sheehan as their model. With thousands of entrants the girls beat the competition to make it into the Southern Regional round of the competition.

The outfit titled “Papillon d’Or” was one of 20 selected out of the 80 regional outfits to go through to the Grand Final in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on May 2nd.

On March 17th the girls revealed their outfit to the Bandon community, when Leona braved the elements and strutted her stuff in Papillon d’Or through the streets of Bandon in the local St Patrick’s Parade.

The students are now looking for your help in the Facebook voting which will take place on the ERP (European Recycling Platform) Facebook page from April 14th – 27th.

These votes count towards the teams overall score on the night.
